The remaining four second round matches Thursday at the Atlanta Tennis Championships are led by top seed and World No. 9 Andy Roddick, No. 3 Lleyton Hewitt and No. 7 Xavier Malisse. Roddick defeated Malisse in the 2001 final at the Atlanta Athletic Club the last time the ATP World Tour tournament was held here. It was Roddick’s first career ATP World Tour title. In addition, Atlanta resident and wild card entry Donald Young attempts to reach his second career ATP World Tour quarter-final as he takes on South African Kevin Anderson on Court 1.
In the opening match on Stadium, Roddick looks for his second straight win against countryman Rajeev Ram. Last month, Roddick defeated Ram in straight sets in the first round at Wimbledon. Roddick will also play a quarter-final doubles match later in the day (w/Fish). Roddick has a 32-7 match record on the season, including an ATP World Tour-best 26-4 mark on hard courts (most wins). The 27-year-old American opened the season with a title in Brisbane and in his last hard court tournament in April at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, he captured his 29th career title.
In the second singles match, top Slovak Lukas Lacko meets Hewitt for the first time. The 22-year-old Lacko is trying to reach his fifth ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season. Hewitt, who finished as World No. 1 in 2001-02, comes in with a 20-8 match record on the season and he’s coming off a fourth round showing at Wimbledon (l. to Djokovic). The 29-year-old Aussie is looking to advance to his fourth ATP World Tour quarter-final or better this year. Last month he captured his 28th career title in Halle, Germany (d. No. 2 Federer).
On Court 1, Illya Marchenko of Ukraine plays Malisse for the first time.
In the next match, Anderson looks for his second win on the ATP World Tour against Young. The winner will reach their first ATP World Tour quarter-final this year.
