ATP Allianz Suisse Open – Wednesday Preview

July 28, 2010 | Comments Off

GstaadThe first four quarter-final berths are up for grabs at the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad on Wednesday, with two of the tournament’s seeds highlighting the day’s play.

First up on Centre Court is No. 4 seed Albert Montanes, a two-time ATP World Tour title winner this year in Estoril and Stuttgart, facing qualifier Andreas Haider-Maurer. Montanes has had the best 12 months of his career, this week setting a new career-high of No. 23 in the world; by contrast, the 23-year-old Haider-Maurer is 250 spots below him at No. 273 in the rankings, and is playing just his second ATP World Tour main draw match of the year today, having beaten Denis Istomin in the first round.

Next on Centre Court is No. 7 seed Richard Gasquet against Daniel Brands. Gasquet was the 2006 champ here but is playing this tournament for the first time in three years when he fell in the quarter-finals. He will be playing the big-serving Brands, who made it all the way to the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time.

Last on Centre is Igor Andreev against Marco Chiudinelli in a battle of unseeded players. Andreev has had stellar results in Gstaad, winning 15 of his 20 career matches here and reaching the semi-finals or better in four of his five previous appearances (including two finals). Chiudinelli will be going for his first quarter-final in four tries here.

On Court 1, World No. 74 Daniel Gimeno-Traver faces last year’s finalist Andreas Beck in a first-time ATP World Tour meeting, although Gimeno-Traver has won both of their previous meetings in the Challengers.
