Fabio Capello has stepped down from his role as the manager of England’s football team, after a dispute with the FA regarding stripping the captaincy from John Terry. Terry has been embroiled in a court case after a racism scandal broke with QPR defender Anton Ferdinand, brother of centre back partner Rio.
Capello is understood to think it unfair to strip the captaincy from Terry, especially as no verdict has been reached in the case yet. Terry has lost the captaincy before, after a scandal broke involving him sleeping with the ex wife of his teammate, Wayne Bridge.
Capello is understood to be retiring, like he was planning to do at the end of the EURO 2012 tournament being held in the summer in Poland and Ukraine.
The bookies are putting forward Harry Redknapp as the favourite to get the job, although it is yet to be seen whether he will quit Spurs or propose he carry on with both jobs simultaneously. Stuart Pearce will take over the role temporarily and is the second favourite to get the job. There are also the usual joke candidates, long odds can be got across the internet on the return of Sven Goran-Eriksson or of recently retired Gary Neville.
