After Scotland, England and Wales won at the weekend, we have a look at the table as it stands and the fixtures still to come in the 6 Nations in a bid to predict how things will end up.
1 England — 6
2 Wales —– 4
3 Scotland — 4
4 Ireland — 2
5 Italy —– 2
6 France —- 0
England are striding out in front, still on for the Grand-Slam. They have to play Italy in a game that could prove to be a potential banana skin but the real test is against the Welsh at the Millenium. Wales could be in with a chance of the championship and will be fired up going into the final game with a chance to deny England of a long awaited Grand-Slam.
France are propping up the rest after a dismal start. Their coach has come in for some criticism after some bizarre selection choices and he will hope for a resurgence in their last two games to save his job. They are left to play Ireland in a crunch match at the lower end of the table and Scotland.
Italy have faded after their shock victory against France early on. They are stuck on 2 points and with tricky fixtures against Ireland and England, it seems likely that’s where they’ll stay.
The Welsh are the team with the momentum. Apart from a terrible first half against the Irish they would be headed for a Grand-Slam clash with England. However with injuries still rattling their squad, they could be steamrolled if the English can play their best rugby.
Ireland have had a disappointing tournament. Close games with England and Scotland saw them come out on the wrong side of both. This weekend’s Scotland game especially will have hit them hard, losing a match they dominated so effectively. With talks that the coaching staff have taken them as far as they can, Ireland will hope to win their last two games and prove everyone wrong. France could be a stumbling block.
Scotland will be on a high after their last performance and as Jim Hamilton pointed out after the game, they are in with a faint sniff of the Championship. Tricky games face them though and there is a good chance that they could finish on their 4 points along with France and Ireland. Points difference could be vital.
