12 Goal League Cup ThrillerWednesday, October 31st, 2012
The Majeski Stadium housed one of the greatest games the Capital One Cup has ever seen. Although since it’s reincarnation the Capital One Cup hasn’t seen many games as yet, this is up there with any game from the Worthington Cup, the Carling Cup and the League Cup.
Reading went up after 12 minutes via Jason Roberts, the frontman looked delighted as he scored the goal that sent the fans into raptures. Lauren Koscielny then scored an own goal which was followed by goals from Leigertwood and Noel Hunt.
The game looked dead with just 35 minutes gone, and cameramen were filming Arsenal fans slinking out of the stadium with their tails between their legs. Walcott gave the faintest of glimmers to the Gunners in added time of the first half but nobody could know what Sky Sports 2 viewers had in store.
Wenger’s half time team talk must have done something. Arsenal were more upbeat in the second half and although it took them 20 minutes to break through they had a small spark. Nobody would have predicted what would happen next however, Koscielny scoring at the right end this time in the 89th minute meant Arsenal had 4 minutes of added time to breakthrough. 95 1/2 minutes in, and nobody knew why the referee hadn’t blown his whistle. Inevitably, Arsenal capitalised through Walcott (maybe, it was unclear if the ball actually even crossed the line) although it was then smashed home from Jenkinson.
Chamakh scored to make it 5-4 and the momentum seemed irreversible but Pogrebnyak’s header looped in to make it a stunning 5-5. Walcott and Chamakh’s very late goals eventually sealed in the 120th minute to end a draining game of football that somehow see’s Arsenal in the next round.
