Spurs Sign Soldado

Thursday, August 1st, 2013

Tottenham Hotspurs have signed Valencia striker Roberto Soldado for a fee believed to be in £26 million. Spurs were not the only English club reportedly interested in his signature and it will be interesting to see what impact this has on the future of Gareth Bale.

The deal is still subject to a medical but problems are not expected and a 4 year contract is expected to be signed on Friday. He will become the 3rd signing of the summer for Tottenham and the second time they have broken their transfer record this summer, after Paulinho signed for £17 million from Corinthians. They have also added £7 million winger Nacar Chadli.

Soldado has scored 6 goals in 11 games for the Spanish national side and has become first choice recently since the demise of Fernando Torres. His career began at Real Madrid where he played 16 times for the first team and many more times for Real Madrid B, who play in the Spanish equivalent of the Championship. He went to Getafe after Madrid and then Valencia signed him after a successful spell there. It is at Valencia that he has thrived, really proving his worth as a top level forward.

All this has meant that Soldado is now 28, meaning Spurs’ outlay is a large amount for a Striker that although in his Prime, doesn’t have too many years left in him. He is a pacey forward but does not rely on such speed though, and this will prolong his time at the top which will be a relief to Spurs fans.

These deals could indicate Tottenham’s intentions to keep Gareth Bale and really push for silverware this year. Bale has reportedly been subject to world record breaking bids from Real Madrid who appear to have cooled their interest in any other player in a bid to sign Bale. Many pundits have suggested that the money is so large for a player who has only dominated for 1 season and the money should be taken but although Tottenham are spending record breaking money themselves, it does not appear they are gearing up for life without the Welshman.
