Paul the “psychic” Octopus, the oracle cephalopod that correctly predicted the outcome of eight matches during the World Cup in South Africa this year, has died. The Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany, has ruled out foul play.

“Management and staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre were devastated to discover that oracle octopus Paul, who achieved global renown during the recent World Cup, had passed away overnight,” the aquarium said in a sombre statement.

Paul made his name by successfully choosing a mussel from one of two boxes bearing the flags of competing nations.

Octopuses rarely live beyond two years so his death was not unexpected.

The Iron Maiden frontman, 52, who holds a commercial pilot’s licence, will captain the Astraeus Airlines plane from Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Dickinson, whose day job is working for the airline, said he switched flights when he found out he could fly the team.

“I was originally supposed to be going to Iceland and flying down to Las Palmas and Tenerife, but this looked a lot more interesting so I’m flying the team down to Naples.”

The frontman, who joined Iron Maiden in 1981, said he was lucky his day job left him time to perform.

“People ask me, which do you enjoy more and I honestly can’t say, but what I can say is that I am never, ever going to give up singing.

“That’s been my life and fortunately I’m in a job where I can get the time off to do it.

To Askri’s embarrassment, that video went absolutely viral and very soon the whole world knew of his mishap. Internet fame being generally short-lived, he may have already escaped into obscurity again – if he hadn’t messed up again recently.

In a match against KAC Kenitra on Saturday, Askri tried to dribble away from KAC’s charging striker Hicham El Aroui. This didn’t work out so well for Askri as El Aroui quickly slid in and scored to put his side 1-0 up.

So how did Askri respond to his latest mishap? He ran. He pulled off his shirt and gloves, and ran away, effectively substituting himself out of the match right then and there.
