Barcelona

Now the big one, the one we’ve all been waiting for. Chelsea, the only English team left in the competition, face the greatest club side on earth, Barcelona. The Catalans are the reigning champions and it will take a truly special performance from Chelsea if they are to leave themselves in with a shot of qualification, with a trip to the famous Nou Camp still to come.

Chelsea’s interim boss Roberto di Matteo has said in the media his team need to produce ‘two perfect’ displays in the games to get through and Frank Lampard has called for his side to keep their discipline. This is because in the last 3 meetings between the clubs Chelsea have had a man sent off.

Both clubs are on spectacular form, with the home side having won 9 and drawn 2 of their games under their new manager. However, Barcelona are unbeaten in 15 and have won 11 straight times in the league, a truly formidable record.

Former Arsenal captain, now of the Catalan giants, Cesc Fabregas caused controversy in the week claiming Chelsea play ‘long ball football’ but this was brushed off by the Chelsea management team who seemingly did not want to get involved with the mind games.

Lionel Messi is the world’s best player, he has scored 186 goals in his last 201 appearances, proving that point. Cristiano Ronaldo appears to be the only person in the world that disagrees. Tonight Lionel scored 5 goals in 90 minutes, in the Champions League. He was the first person to do this but that wasn’t the impressive thing. He did it was grace, talent, determination, but also humility. Messi is likeable and fantastic, some Ronaldo has certainly not mastered.

However, Messi didn’t score all the goals, young talent Tello came on for his european debut and grabbed 2 goals in 7 minutes to make an instant impact. He was though, of course, overshadowed by the man Gary Linekar described today as “the best player ever”.

Barcelona cruised through with an aggregate 10-2 win, they surely can not be stopped in the competition. Despite rumours their manager would up sticks, it seems impossible anybody would be stupid enough to walk away from what is possibly the greatest club side in history, with probably the greatest player.

The stand out game in today’s Champions League fixtures saw FC Barcelona travel to German side Bayern Leverkusen in the first leg of the first knock out stage. Bayern had finished second in the Bundesliga last year but have struggled this year so far.

They were under the cosh from the first whistle, as expected when you play the champions, but held out effectively until just before half time when Chilean Winger Sanchez scored after a well worked move.

Their lead with cancelled out after the break when Kadlec popped up with a header from a Corluka cross, giving the German’s hope. However Sanchez popped up again to cooly round the keeper and score.

Leverkusen had hope, only 1 goal behind travelling to the Nou Camp. That was until Mr Leo Messi popped up, inevitably, to score from a Dani Alves whipped ball. Barcelona will surely progress now, as long as Bayern do not pull out a miracle in the return leg.

The other game saw a dominant Lyon rampage all over Cypriot champions Apoel Nicosia. They should have won by a greater margin after having 18 shots on target but they will at least take a 1-0 lead to the return leg and they too, will be expected to qualify.

El Clasico. Barcelona v Real Madrid. One of the great match ups of the modern age. Supreme talent on both sides. 2 of the worlds top managers. 22 dedicated players. 1 questionable referee. 4 goals.

It had everything.

Barcelona were pounded from the outset, Pique’s mistake giving Higuain an early chance. Ronaldo battered on the door in the first half. Barcelona couldn’t get as much possession as they liked.

They say that a great team wins when it plays badly. Barcelona were hounded. Madrid were on top but spurned chances. Pedro popped up out of nowhere and suddenly Madrid were one down despite a solid first 40 minutes.

Barcelona could smell victory, already 2-1 up from the first leg, they knew they had a great advantage. Madrid were reeling from the surprise goal and WHAM. Dani Alves scored. Oh what a goal. The ball bobbled out towards him from a corner and he spanked it into the back of the net.

The second half saw Madrid’s come back. Who else but Ronaldo. He rounded Pinto with hilarious ease and slotted it to make it 2-1.

Barcelona concentrated. Well 10 of them did. Puyol was casual and slipped. Benzema was cheeky and finished with aplomb. With a blink of an eye. It was 2-2. This was game on.

The end of the game got scrappy. As it was destined to do. Yellow cards were handed out like sweets. The referee proved himself to be hilariously foolhardy with some decision. Sergio Ramos got a second yellow for, what replays showed to be, jumping in the air. The referee gave some other cards, fouls etc that made Mourinho want to pull his hair out, made the likes of Pepe apoplectic with rage and left the Barcelona fans smirking.

Overall it was great. The ref was poor. The game was scrappy. The goals weren’t all special. The match, however, was brilliant. If Spanish football could clean up its act, the Premiership would be in trouble.
