After the New York Giants overcame the San Francisco 49ers in a hugely tense overtime win they will represent the NFL in the Super Bowl on the 5th February. The New England Patriots will step up to represent the AFC and as as an even numbered Super Bowl the AFC team will have the honour of being the “home team”.
The match, which is being played at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, has had most details confirmed already. The Super Bowl is much more than a standard game of football, is almost more famous for the entertainment and advertising that surrounds it. Madonna has been confirmed as headlining the half time show, with rumours that Nicki Manaj will join her.
The commercials, which interject the game at virtually every stoppage, are a huge part of the Superbowl and are often specifically made for the match and are worth millions of Dollars. An average of $3.7 million will be paid for every 30 seconds, a figure which breaks all previous records.
Overall, the two teams should play a tight game, Eli Manning has carried the Giants this far in a great post season performance but he will come up against Tom Brady, an elite quarterback who has been running the AFL for 12 years.
Return on the 5th of February for a more in-depth look at the two teams.
Brett Favre has confirmed he will play in his 20th NFL season after signing up with the Minnesota Vikings once more.
The 40-year-old, who holds the record as the oldest starting quarterback in NFL play-off history, had been expected to retire this summer.
But defeat by Super Bowl winners the New Orleans Saints in the play-offs last season left Favre hungry for more.
“I’d love to win a Super Bowl,” said Favre. “I owe it to this organisation to give it one more try.”
Favre spent last season with the Vikings, throwing for 4,202 yards with 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions during the regular season.
The grizzled quarterback, indecisive about returning after May surgery on his left ankle, decided to jump on a plane after teammates Jared Allen, Steve Hutchinson and Ryan Longwell flew to Mississippi on Tuesday to recruit him.
And he said the 20th season of his record-setting career would be his final year, conceding people probably won’t believe it.
“I’ve done it all. There’s nothing left for me to prove,” said Favre, who joined the Vikings for practice Wednesday. “I’m here to have fun, help these guys win. I really enjoy this group of guys like you wouldn’t believe. I think the feeling is mutual.”
Favre said he hopes to play on Sunday when the Vikings face the San Francisco 49ers in an exhibition game.
For the first time in nearly two decades, the top two seeds from both the AFC and the NFC will square off in the biggest football game of the year, when the Indianapolis Colts take on the New Orleans Saints at Super Bowl 44.
The clash has already been dubbed the battle of Drew Brees vs Peyton Manning and while the Saints are looking to create history, the Colts are looking to repeat it. Peyton Manning faces his hometown team, once quarterbacked by his father, as the Colts try for their second title in four years, with Drew Brees and the Saints making their debut on the “Biggest Show on Earth”.
The Saints enter the game with a 13-3 record for the 2009 regular season, compared to the Colts 14-2 record. In the playoff games, both teams had a 1st round bye. The Colts entered the Super Bowl off of 20–3 and 30–17 victories, while the Saints advanced with scores of 45–14 and 31–28 (in overtime), defeating last years runners up the Arizona Cardinals in their first game.
How the Saints can win:
Keep pressure on Manning: New Orleans’ defense battered Vikings quarterback Brett Favre in the NFC Championship, and they will have to knock Manning off his feet a few times if they hope to get anywhere. They are probably going to have a little more trouble, however, with the Colts’ offensive line.
Create turnovers: Statistically, the Saints were in the bottom third of the league in total yardage allowed, but they were second in turnovers. If they have any hope of winning this game, they are going to have to force the Colts into handing over the ball a couple of times.
Get an early lead: The Colts are at their best when they are ahead, so New Orleans can’t afford to be trying to play catch up all day. If they are forced into throwing the ball time after time, the Colts’ speedy defensive ends will simply create havoc in the backfield.
The Saints’ game-changing players are Reggie Bush, Jeremy Shockey, and Darren Sharper.
Reggie Bush is the most dynamic player in the NFL and is able to generate yardage in many ways. Jeremy Shockey is capable of having a 100-plus receiving yard game, while Darren Sharper fires up the team with his big hits.
How the Colts can win:
Don’t let Brees get settled: Manning may be in a league of his own, but Brees isn’t that far behind – and if he has time and space to step into his throws he can get as hot as anyone in the league.
Stop the run: The Saints offense is so dangerous not only because they throw the ball so well, but because their effective run game gives them balance and makes it tough for defenses to key on one area. The Colts have to limit the run and control this game.
The Colts’ game changers are receivers Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon, and Dallas Clark. Peyton Manning’s confident play is rock solid, so the question is whether his receivers’ hands will be there to complete the mission.

Thousands of Jets fans turned Times Square into a sea of green and white Thursday with a pep rally to put their heroes in a fightin’ mood for their championship game with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg even unofficially renamed Manhattan Island “Revis Island” (after the Jets star CB Darrelle Revis), while Gang Green’s gang chanted “J-E-T-S” and waved team-colored towels. Let’s hope the team is as fired up as the fans – being the 8 point underdog for tonight, the Jets’ journey to Superbowl XLIV won’t be an easy ride….
